Footage, courtesy of @world_animal_protection , is circulating + we must warn is very distressing to watch. (There's a video on their website). For tourists, we see trips on elephants' backs or the tricks they do as entertainment, not knowing the torture + abuse that these beautiful animals have had to endure and continue to endure, just so we can ride them or watch them perform. It's a sharp echo of the life of Tilikum, otherwise known as Shamu, at SeaWorld Orlando. When the SeaWorld heads realised the amount of money they were making from the original 'Shamu' in 1965, they began adding more parks with more Shamus. But it wasn't until Tilikum killed his instructor in 2010 that the world's eyes were fully opened + ready to listen to the horrific journey of how the Orca whales had became spectacles for us to marvel at. As soon as tourists learned, SeaWorld's numbers plummeted, stock prices fell + so on, to the point that the park decided to focus on a 'Shamu-free future.' (Obviously, this was to save their reputation). It's the demand of elephant tourism that's making people kidnap and separate the animals from their families before torturing them for profit, same as the demand to watch Shamu was what made people continue to do snatch Orca whales from different places + keep them in captivity. He was boiled alive at the hands of Florida Prison Guards in 2012 - he was put in a shower room where they had set the water to a scalding temperature and left him there for two hours. According to inmates, he screamed for the officers to let him out. When they came back, Rainey was dead and his reddened skin had begun peeling off and floating beside his body. Why was he put in the shower in the first place? He had defecated in his cell and smeared his faeces on himself and on the walls - he suffered from schizophrenia. The officers told him to clean himself off which he refused and they decided that this was a good enough reason to torture him. None of the alleged four officers who subjected him to this have been charged. In fact, one of the alleged officers, Roland Clarke, went on to be a cop but was allegedly fired for questionable conduct. There's a pattern here, and it all points to police officers; there's a blatant air of arrogance and a God complex that some of them seem to have, and it makes us wonder how police officers are being trained...or is it that some of these people who become police officers already have that arrogant, God complex within them and it soars when they become, to an extent, the law? This case also shows how police officers are blatantly lacking in training in how to work with inmates who have mental health issues. Allegations that some of @boohoo 's factories in Allegations that some of @boohoo 's factories in Leicester have inhumanely treated their workers are circling - a Sunday Times report claimed that they are paying their workers below minimum wage; a measly £3.50 per hour and not providing them with protection from #covid19 . We are in the middle of a pandemic and Leicester has been put in a localised lockdown after there was a spike, meaning no-one should be at work, yet, allegedly, that Boohoo factory was still running. Why? Because of money. This is why fast fashion needs to go. Fast fashion brands are churning out new products every week at the physical, mental, emotional and financial detriment of its workers and putting their lives at risk, just so they can make a profit. Shukri Abdi was a precious 12-year-old Black Musli Shukri Abdi was a precious 12-year-old Black Muslim Somali girl who came to the UK with her family to grow and live peacefully. She was born in a refugee camp in Kenya because her family had fled Somalia due to the conflict. She was tormented at school and was found dead in a river. It's taken global protests, worldwide petitions, public outcry (only after the case resurfacing because of the Black Lives Matter movement) and almost 6000 emails to the Greater Manchester Mayor to ask for a wider investigation of the events leading up to her death. We can assure you, with the utmost confidence, it wouldn't have taken all of this, if Shukri wasn't Black and a refugee.
